Oglethorpe Edges Belhaven 2-1 in Men’s Soccer

Oglethorpe scored twice in the second half to rally past Belhaven 2-1 on Sunday at the Woodruff P.E. Center. The Blazers carried a one-goal lead into halftime after a goal from Aiden Paz in the 28th minute.

Belhaven created early chances, with Wyatt Dupre and Ciaran Colvin testing the Oglethorpe goalkeeper within the first 10 minutes. Paz entered the game in the 23rd minute and made an immediate impact, scoring off an assist from Luke Finley to give the Blazers a 1-0 lead.

Justin Ramirez made his first start of the season in goal and preserved the lead with a save on Jake Duncan-Smith in the 33rd minute. The teams went into halftime with Belhaven ahead.

Oglethorpe responded early in the second half, with Erik Holmen tying the match at 63 minutes, assisted by Alex Watson and Nathan Leveque. Ramirez kept the game level with a save on Kenny Griffin in the 81st minute. Griffin then scored off a feed from Addofo El Bey two minutes later to put the Stormy Petrels ahead 2-1.

The Blazers pressed for an equalizer, earning a corner kick in the 88th minute and taking their final shot with 38 seconds remaining. Belhaven finished with a 14-11 shot advantage and led 6-4 in corner kicks. Colvin and Sanchez led the team with three shots each, while Paz scored on his lone shot on goal.

Ramirez played all 90 minutes and finished with two saves. Belhaven will host LeTourneau at Belhaven Bowl Stadium on Thursday, Sept. 10, at 7:30 p.m.
