Southern Miss’s Kobi Albert Named Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week

HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Kobi Albert, a redshirt junior defensive back for Southern Miss, was named the Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Monday. The award recognizes his standout performance in the Golden Eagles’ 49-3 victory over Alcorn State last Saturday.

Albert, who recorded only one tackle in the game, made a significant impact with three interceptions. The three picks tie for the second-most in school history, matching a record set five times over the program’s 110-year history. His first interception occurred on the opening drive, and he added two more in the second quarter and early in the second half to thwart Alcorn State’s offensive efforts.

The Golden Eagles’ defense held the Braves to 223 total yards, the fewest allowed since 2021. It also marked the first game since that season in which Southern Miss did not allow a touchdown. Albert’s interceptions and the defense’s performance helped secure the program’s most dominant defensive showing in recent years, according to school officials.

This is Albert’s first weekly league award and the first defensive honor for Southern Miss since Josh Moten received it last season. The victory and individual accolades highlight the team’s strong start under coach Blake Anderson as they prepare for their upcoming schedule.
