Northwest Mississippi splits doubleheader with Holmes in MACCC baseball
The No. 18 Northwest Mississippi Community College baseball team (27-14, 14-6) earned a split against Holmes Community College (17-22, 9-11) on Tuesday at Charlie Donald Field. The Rangers secured a 17-6 run-rule victory in the first game before falling 6-4 in the second, with Holmes turning three double plays that limited Northwest’s offensive opportunities, according to team coaches.
In Game 1, Northwest scored early and often. The Rangers took a 2-0 lead in the first inning after back-to-back triples from South McCoy and Preston Johnson, followed by a sacrifice fly from John Whit Snopek. Holmes responded with a run in the bottom of the inning, but Northwest broke the game open in the third, scoring four runs on a home run by Johnson and a three-run triple by Corey Watkins.
Northwest continued to extend its lead, with McCoy hitting his 11th home run of the season and Barrett McKenney hitting a grand slam in the fifth inning. The Rangers added insurance runs in the sixth and seventh innings, including a home run from Walker Sanders, before closing out the game 17-6 in seven innings. Darrin Randle earned his second win, pitching six innings and allowing only one earned run, according to team reports.
In the second game, Holmes took an early lead and held on for a 6-4 win. The Bulldogs scored first and maintained the lead despite Northwest’s efforts to rally. The Rangers scored twice in the third, but errors and missed opportunities kept them from overcoming Holmes. Charley Dunn drove in two runs for Holmes with a double in the third, while Holmes added a home run in the sixth for insurance. Starter Warner Young pitched a complete game for Holmes, earning the win.
Northwest will travel to Wesson on Saturday for a doubleheader against No. 21 Copiah-Lincoln Community College. The games are scheduled for 2 p.m. and 5 p.m., with streaming available at nwccrangers.com. The Rangers remain tied with Jones College for third in the MACCC standings, behind East Central and Pearl River, according to conference officials.
