Millsaps Tops Belhaven 36-20 in Riverside Rumble
Millsaps College defeated Belhaven University 36-20 Thursday night at Harper Davis Field in Jackson, Mississippi. The Majors took control during the second quarter and maintained their lead through the rest of the game, according to game reports.
Belhaven started strong, forcing three turnovers in the opening quarter. Alex Desarzant caused a fumble on Millsaps’ third play, and Xander Roberts recovered at midfield. The Blazers capitalized, with quarterback Ian Burleson connecting with John Davis for 42 yards, setting up a one-yard touchdown run by Burleson to give Belhaven a 7-0 lead.
The Blazers forced another turnover on the next possession but were unable to score due to penalties. Millsaps responded with a field goal and a touchdown run by Derrick Tasby Jr., taking a 10-7 lead. The Majors added two more touchdowns in the third quarter, extending their lead to 30-7 before Belhaven mounted a late rally.
Belhaven trimmed the deficit late in the third quarter with a 61-yard pass from Burleson to Will Jones and a subsequent touchdown run by Cayson Williams. In the fourth quarter, the Blazers scored again, bringing the score to 30-20 after Jacob DeAngelo’s rushing touchdown. However, Millsaps sealed the game with a 25-yard touchdown run by Tameron Patterson in the final minutes.
Burleson completed 15 passes for 232 yards and a touchdown, while rushing for another score. Tabor led Millsaps’ ground game with 94 yards on 16 carries. Davis caught five passes for 110 yards, and Jones’ 61-yard reception was the longest of the night for Belhaven. Special teams standout Kyle Norris averaged 45.7 yards on seven punts.
Defensively, John Ross Craven led Belhaven with eight tackles, one for loss, and a forced fumble. The Blazers will host East Texas Baptist next Saturday at Belhaven Bowl Stadium, with kickoff scheduled for 6 p.m., according to team officials.
