Northwest Mississippi splits doubleheader with Co-Lin behind Lightsey’s two homers
The #18 Northwest Mississippi Community College baseball team split a doubleheader with #21 Copiah-Lincoln Community College on Saturday, dropping the first game 12-7 before winning the second 5-4. The Rangers remain within one game of second place in the MACCC standings, trailing Jones College and East Central Community College by one game with six games remaining, according to team sources.
In the first game, Northwest took an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning thanks to a three-run home run by Barrett McKenney. Tyce Powers started on the mound for the Rangers and held Co-Lin scoreless through five innings, allowing only two runs on a two-run homer by Avery Griffin. However, the Wolves scored six runs over the final three innings to secure the win.
Despite the loss, the Rangers showed resilience in the second game. Evan Lightsey hit two home runs, including a go-ahead shot in the sixth inning, to lead Northwest to a 5-4 victory. South McCoy also contributed with a key save on the mound and helped hold Co-Lin at bay in the late innings. Coach Mark Carson praised Lightsey and McCoy for their performances, noting Lightsey’s approach at the plate and McCoy’s strikeout ability as pivotal to the win.
Northwest’s next games include a doubleheader Wednesday at home against Mississippi Delta Community College and another doubleheader Saturday against top-ranked Pearl River Community College. Weather forecasts suggest potential schedule disruptions, and fans are encouraged to check the team’s website and social media for updates.
