Northwest Mississippi softball rallies for walk-off sweep over Holmes
Senatobia, Miss. — Northwest Mississippi Community College’s softball team secured a doubleheader sweep against Holmes Community College on Tuesday night. The Rangers won the opener 7-0 and rallied from a six-run deficit to win the second game 12-11 in walk-off fashion, according to team reports.
In the first game, pitcher Meredith Dearman dominated, striking out 10 and allowing just six hits in a complete game shutout. The Rangers scored early and often, with a lead-off walk to Ava Claire Rhoden in the first inning turning into a run on a sacrifice fly by Carleigh Calarco. Northwest added four more runs in the third, highlighted by RBI doubles from Handley McAtee and Lillianna Cates. Dearman said her improved control helped her succeed.
Game two saw Holmes jump out to an early 4-0 lead with a three-run home run by Lauren Frazier. Northwest responded in the fourth, with Sela Mancini hitting her third home run of the season. The Bulldogs extended their lead to 11-5 in the sixth, but the Rangers mounted a late rally, scoring seven runs in the final inning to win 12-11. Mary Madison Kelley delivered the walk-off single, capping the comeback.
Head coach Chelsea Bramlett praised her team’s resilience, noting Mancini’s confidence at the plate and the team’s ability to stay focused amid adversity. “Everyone contributed to this team effort,” Bramlett said.
The Rangers are set to host No. 4 Copiah-Lincoln Community College on Saturday in their final regular-season home games. The matchups carry significant MACCC standings implications, with weather possibly affecting the schedule. Northwest’s final two series include games at Mississippi Delta and against No. 5 Pearl River to close the season.
Sela Mancini emphasized the importance of continued effort as the season winds down, saying, “We need to stay focused because every team is good. We’re preparing for regionals.”
