Northwest Mississippi softball sweeps Mississippi Delta in doubleheader
The #17 Northwest Mississippi Community College softball team (26-13, 18-6) swept Mississippi Delta Community College (11-35, 3-23) on Tuesday at the Carl and Brenda Grubb Softball Complex. The Rangers won game one 11-2 in six innings and secured a 12-1 victory in game two.
In the opening game, Northwest quickly took control, scoring four runs in the first inning after a leadoff walk and a series of singles. Sela Mancini drove in the first run with an RBI single, and other players contributed to extend the lead. The Rangers added three more runs in the third inning, highlighted by Emma Jennings’ RBI single. Mississippi Delta scored twice in the bottom of the fourth but couldn’t catch up. Northwest sealed the game with a strong sixth inning, including a home run by Carleigh Calarco and a triple from Mancini.
Pitcher Dearman earned her 18th win of the season, striking out 10 batters and allowing only one earned run. Calarco led the offense with a 4-for-4 performance, including a home run and three runs scored. Jennings went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, while Mancini finished 2-for-3 with three runs scored.
In game two, Northwest again set the tone early, scoring seven runs in the second inning. The offense benefited from an early error by Mississippi Delta and produced RBI hits from multiple players, including Armstrong, Jennings, Rhoden, McAtee, and Calarco. Catelyn Brown pitched 4.2 innings for the win, striking out seven and allowing just one run. Brown was relieved by Sydney Hersom for the final out.
The Rangers totaled 18 hits in game two and capitalized on four errors by Mississippi Delta. They also turned a crucial double play to halt a Trojans rally in the first inning. Northwest’s defense and timely hitting helped secure the convincing victory.
Up next, Northwest will host #4 Copiah-Lincoln Community College in a doubleheader Thursday at the Ranger Softball Field. Co-Lin leads the conference standings with a 40-5 overall record and a 21-3 MACCC mark. The team aims to compete against the defending national champions in what promises to be a challenging series. Saturday’s games against #5 Pearl River Community College could impact postseason seeding, with the Rangers eyeing a possible move into second or third place in the standings.
