No. 24 Memphis tops Ole Miss 3-1 in women’s soccer

Ole Miss soccer lost its first game of the season, falling 3-1 to No. 24 Memphis on Thursday night at Ole Miss Soccer Stadium in Oxford, Mississippi.

The Rebels (4-1-0) opened the scoring early, with Alena Watts forcing a save from Memphis goalkeeper Ava Galani in the second minute. Memphis responded with two goals in the opening 11 minutes, with Ai Kitagawa scoring in the eighth minute and Evelyn Mackay netting in the 11th, giving the Tigers a 2-0 lead at halftime.

Ole Miss trimmed the deficit in the 28th minute when freshman Teaghan Irvin scored her first collegiate goal, assisted by Audrey Shackelford. Memphis extended its lead in the 76th minute, with Abby Forsgren scoring off an assist from Kitagawa to make it 3-1, which held as the final score.

The Tigers outshot the Rebels 20-10 overall and placed eight attempts on goal compared to five for Ole Miss. Taylor Prigge made four saves for the Rebels, who will host ULM on Sunday at 2 p.m. CT. The game will be streamed on SEC Network+.

Ole Miss’s next opponent, ULM, will visit Oxford on Sunday for a 2 p.m. game. The Rebels aim to bounce back after their first loss of the season.
