Mississippi State Highlights Key Takeaways from SEC Media Days in Tampa
TAMPA, Fla. — Mississippi State took center stage Thursday at SEC Media Days, with head coach Jeff Lebby and players Kamario Taylor, Anthony Evans III, and Kelley Jones representing the Bulldogs. The event offers a preview of the upcoming college football season as the team prepares for preseason camp.
Lebby emphasized the team’s goal to take the next step this fall. “As I think about year three for us, I think about taking the next step,” he said. The Bulldogs improved from two wins in 2024 to five last season but fell short of their ultimate goals. Lebby and players expressed a desire to turn close losses into wins by focusing on details and finishing strong.
Evans highlighted the importance of experience returning to the roster. “Our roster is in a much better place than it’s been the last two seasons,” Lebby said. “That immediately gives you a chance to upgrade and change the outcome.” Evans, who aims to break the school’s single-season receiving record, said pressure is nothing new to him. “Pressure is a privilege,” he said. “It means you deserve the role.”
Taylor’s potential drew praise from one of college football’s top coaches. Nick Saban called Taylor “really, really good” and noted his high talent level. Taylor, the highest-rated quarterback in MSU history, expressed confidence in his abilities. “Pressure is a privilege,” he said. “If I keep going, I can do some special things.”
Kelley Jones has his sights set on winning the Jim Thorpe Award and possibly being a first-round NFL draft pick next spring. He said he wants to be the best corner in the country and is committed to supporting his teammates. Jones allowed the fewest receptions of any SEC corner last season, and analysts say he plays with a physical edge.
Defensively, the Bulldogs are optimistic with the return of Zach Arnett as defensive coordinator. Lebby praised Arnett’s previous success and leadership. “He made it really, really hard to play against him,” Lebby said. “He’s been great from a leadership standpoint and will help us affect the quarterback more.”
On offense, Evans aims to surpass teammate Brenen Thompson’s 1,054 receiving yards from last year. Lebby noted the offensive line has improved and will continue developing depth. “We’re in a much better spot than a year ago,” he said. “Balance up front will be critical to our success.”
Mississippi State’s season outlook appears promising, with returning talent and strategic leadership setting the stage for progress ahead of the upcoming campaign.
