Mississippi State’s Anthony Evans Aims to Break Receiving Record in 2026 Season

STARKVILLE, Miss. — Mississippi State wide receiver Anthony Evans III is targeting the school’s single-season receiving yards record in the upcoming 2026 football season. Evans has his sights set on surpassing last year’s record-holder, Brenen Thompson, who finished with 1,054 yards.

Evans finished 2025 third in the Southeastern Conference with 67 receptions and totaled 831 yards. He describes himself as the “Luigi” to Thompson’s “Mario,” but now considers himself the primary receiver for the Bulldogs. Evans said he plans to build on his previous success, which came in his first year in coach Jeff Lebby’s offense.

“That was just the start,” Evans said. “Learning the offense has helped me set up a record-setting season.” His quarterback, Kamario Taylor, has noticed improvements. “I’ve seen him take a big leap,” Taylor said. “He’s more vocal and stepping out of his shell. We’re expecting him to win the Fred Biletnikoff Award this year.”

Evans was recently named to the watch list for the Biletnikoff Award, given annually to the nation’s top receiver. Despite his individual ambitions, Evans emphasizes team success and leadership. He recently spoke with teammate Gracen Harris about their shared goals for the season.

“I just have to stay true to myself and let whatever happens happen,” Evans said. “This is all God’s plan. I’m just following the footsteps he provides.”

If Evans achieves his goal, he could follow Thompson’s path from college star to NFL player, as he’s confident in his growth and abilities. The Bulldogs’ season begins Saturday against ULM, and Evans’s performance could be a key storyline for Mississippi State’s 2026 campaign.
