Mississippi State football begins preseason camp with focus on development and depth

Mississippi State opened its preseason football practices Thursday morning, with head coach Jeff Lebby highlighting the team’s progress and goals. Lebby said the Bulldogs are in a much stronger position than in previous years, calling this the best roster and staff since his arrival.

“Since the day we got here, we’ve talked about building something sustainable,” Lebby said. “Now we’re in Year 3. There’s no question this is the best roster we’ve had and the best staff we’ve had. It’s only Day 1 of camp, but we’re much further ahead than we were a year ago, and it’s not even close compared to two years ago. Now it’s time to go do it.”

The team is preparing for its season opener Sept. 5 against ULM. Lebby said he aims to increase roster depth over the coming weeks to provide more options and competition across multiple positions, including the offensive and defensive lines, linebacker, secondary, and receiver.

Quarterback Kamario Taylor, a sophomore, showed promise last season, throwing for 629 yards with five touchdowns and one interception. He also rushed for 513 yards and scored eight times. Lebby praised Taylor’s self-coaching and focus, stating he has a lot of work ahead but is committed to improvement.

Senior wide receiver Anthony Evans III, who led MSU with 67 catches for 831 yards and four touchdowns last year, has also been highlighted for his growth. Lebby noted Evans’ increased confidence and dedication since arriving in Starkville.

The Bulldogs’ backfield also features junior Fluff Bothwell, who gained 677 yards and scored six touchdowns last season. Developing depth behind Bothwell is a priority, with freshmen Cooper Crosby and J.J. Hill joining the mix, and junior Xavier Gayten providing additional experience. Lebby emphasized the importance of running back depth for their offensive scheme.

Veteran center Canon Boone, on the Rimington Trophy watch list, anchors the offensive line. However, Lebby indicated that the team will experiment with different line combinations to identify the best starters and depth options. The team plans to hold three scrimmages before their season opener.

Lebby stressed that the team’s focus is on improving daily, establishing strong work habits, and managing energy and recovery. He expressed optimism about the team’s progress and readiness for the season ahead.
