Mississippi College’s Sofia Mendez Named GSC Women’s Golf Scholar-Athlete
Clinton, Miss. — Sofia Mendez of Mississippi College has been named the Gulf South Conference Champion Scholar-Athlete for women’s golf, the league announced. Mendez, a sophomore from Bogotá, Colombia, posted a perfect 4.00 GPA as a business administration major.
She is the first golfer from Mississippi College to earn the award since its inception in 2019-20, and the first recipient during the 2025-26 academic year. The honor is given at each GSC championship site to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative GPA among participating teams. Eligibility requires a minimum of 48 credit hours completed, and athletes can only earn the award once per academic year.
Mendez joins a list of Mississippi College student-athletes recognized for academic excellence, including Emma Roberts (women’s tennis) and Cole Benoit (men’s outdoor track and field) in 2024-25, and Caroline Perry, who earned multiple awards in 2023-24 across cross country and track and field.
Her achievement highlights Mississippi College’s ongoing commitment to academic and athletic excellence. The school has celebrated numerous scholar-athletes across various sports within the Gulf South Conference.
