WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — Carey University’s women’s soccer team battled No. 1-ranked Keiser University to a 1-1 draw Tuesday morning at Arrigo-Vecellio Field.
Both teams’ defenses controlled the game in the first half, limiting scoring chances. The teams combined for just six shots in the opening 45 minutes, with only two on target. Carey’s Luana Falconeri created the first dangerous opportunity, slipping past her defender and shooting toward the bottom corner. Keiser goalkeeper Mio Tanaka made a key save to keep the match scoreless.
In the 33rd minute, Kayla Martin nearly put Carey ahead with a high, floating shot that was tipped over the crossbar by Tanaka. Later, in the closing minutes of the half, Keiser’s Livia Pertl cleared a dangerous cross, preserving the scoreless tie heading into halftime.
The second half followed a similar pattern until the 57th minute, when Raquel Diaz sent a free kick into the box. Maddie Davis collected the loose ball and scored, giving Carey a 1-0 lead. Keiser responded in the 68th minute, when a handball in the penalty area on a blocked shot resulted in a penalty kick. Haley Miller converted the opportunity, leveling the match at 1-1.
Both defenses remained solid in the final 22 minutes, preventing any late goals and allowing the teams to settle for the draw. Carey will return to play Sunday, Aug. 30, in Georgia against Georgia Gwinnett. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
