Blue Mountain splits doubleheader with Christian Brothers in softball
Blue Mountain College softball team split a doubleheader against NCAA Division II Christian Brothers University on Tuesday at the BMCU Sportsplex. The Toppers lost the opener 7-3 but won the second game 5-4 in extra innings, according to school officials.
In the first game, Christian Brothers scored early and often, adding runs in the first, third, and fourth innings to lead 3-0. Blue Mountain responded in the fourth inning when Rachel Rommel drove in a run with an RBI single. The Toppers tied the game in the fifth with a two-RBI single from Kelsey Camp, who set a new school record with 35 RBIs this season. Despite the rally, Christian Brothers scored four runs in the sixth inning, aided by defensive errors, and pulled away for the win.
Anna Harrison led Blue Mountain at the plate in game one, going 3-for-4 and stealing three bases. Camp contributed two RBIs, and Rommel added a hit and a run scored. Bri Langley took the loss, pitching five innings with one strikeout, while Madison Montgomery pitched two scoreless relief innings.
In game two, Blue Mountain fell behind 2-0 early but fought back. Bre Ramsey sparked a rally in the fourth with an RBI double, and Karen Wisher followed with a two-RBI double to give the Toppers a 3-2 lead. Christian Brothers responded with two runs in the fifth to go ahead 4-3, but the Toppers tied it in the bottom of the inning when Mikaylah Fuqua drove in an RBI single.
In the eighth inning, Gail Wisher delivered a walk-off RBI single to center field, scoring Fuqua and sealing the 5-4 victory. Neely Cooper pitched the complete game, allowing four runs on six hits with three strikeouts. Blue Mountain totaled nine hits in the game, with key contributions from Ramsey, Karen Wisher, Fuqua, and Gail Wisher.
The split keeps the Toppers competitive against strong opponents and demonstrates resilience and determination, according to school officials.
