Alabama Huntsville beats Mississippi College to end GSC tournament run

OXFORD, Ala. — Mississippi College’s softball season ended Friday afternoon as Alabama Huntsville defeated the Choctaws 5-3 at Choccolocco Park in the Gulf South Conference Tournament, according to tournament officials.

The Chargers (36-21) took an early lead with a big second inning, capitalizing on defensive miscues. They scored three unearned runs after a bases-clearing double by Alexa Douthitt. UAH also scored a solo home run from Keli Madden in the third inning to extend its lead to 5-2.

The Choctaws (30-23-1) mounted a late rally. Ellie Fryar delivered an RBI single in the second inning, and Lydia Bethards added a pinch-hit RBI single in the sixth to cut the deficit to two runs. Mississippi College was unable to complete the comeback, despite a strong effort from Fryar, who had two hits. Shelby Samples and Kate Rills each added extra-base hits.

In the circle, Camryn Bailey provided four innings of scoreless relief for Mississippi College. UAH’s Katie Bracken earned the complete-game win, allowing three runs on seven hits. With the loss, the Choctaws await their postseason fate during Monday’s NCAA selection show.

Mississippi College had previously advanced in the tournament with a 4-1 victory over Montevallo on Thursday, but was eliminated by UAH on Friday, ending its run in the Gulf South Conference Tournament.
