Delta State Baseball Seeks GSC Championship Title as No. 5 Seed, Faces UAH in Opening Game

The Delta State University baseball team will compete in the Gulf South Conference tournament as the No. 5 seed. The Statesmen will face No. 8 UAH in the opening round Friday at 11 a.m. at Choccolocco Park in Oxford, Alabama.

The first round features two single-elimination games. Delta State will play UAH, while No. 6 Trevecca Nazarene faces No. 7 Montevallo. The winners will advance to a six-team double-elimination portion of the tournament from Saturday through Tuesday, according to the conference.

The Voice of the Statesmen, Michael Gross, will broadcast the games on the Statesmen Sports Radio Network. Fans can also watch all games on FloSports.

Delta State has a storied history in the GSC tournament, making its 41st appearance, the most of any program in the conference. The team leads the GSC with 21 appearances in the championship game and has won 15 titles, last claiming the crown in 2019 with a 6-0 victory over West Florida.

The team is currently ranked fifth in the South Region poll, released Monday. First-team All-GSC outfielder Tucker Jones leads the offense with a .360 batting average, 20 extra-base hits, and 57 RBIs. He also leads the GSC with 29 stolen bases.

On the mound, GSC Pitcher of the Year Adrian Byrd has posted a 1.64 ERA with 91 strikeouts in 77 innings. Dawson Muenzenmay has a 3.86 ERA with a 5-2 record and five saves in 17 appearances, totaling 20 strikeouts in 23 innings.

The Chargers, UAH, secured their spot in the tournament after an 8-5 run since their recent sweep of Trevecca Nazarene. Taylor Bush leads UAH offensively with a .346 batting average, 14 doubles, six home runs, and 37 RBIs. Starting pitcher Cole Loftis has a 6.06 ERA with a 2-3 record and 63 strikeouts in 65 innings.
