Trojans rally past Mississippi College in extra innings at GSC softball tournament
OXFORD, Ala. — Trevecca Nazarene rallied in the seventh inning and pulled away in extra innings to beat Mississippi College 7-3 Thursday night in the winners bracket at the Gulf South Conference Softball Championship at Choccolocco Park.
The Choctaws (30-22-1) jumped ahead early. Ellie Fryar scored on a passed ball in the first inning to give Mississippi College a 1-0 lead. Trevecca Nazarene (21-18) responded in the second when Sarah Kinderdine scored on a wild pitch to tie the game.
Mississippi College regained the lead in the fifth inning after Morgan Lavergne drew a bases-loaded walk to score Hadley Lemons. The Choctaws extended their lead in the sixth when Blakely Gill hit an inside-the-park home run to right field, making it 3-1.
Trevecca Nazarene tied the game in the seventh with RBI singles from Sarah Nicholson and Annabelle Ellis. The game remained tied at 3-3 until the eighth, when the Trojans capitalized on multiple Mississippi College errors and scored four runs. Annalise Mecklenburg delivered a two-run single to left field during the inning’s key rally.
Gill led Mississippi College offensively with two hits and an RBI. Ashlyn Rodgers and Hadley Lemons each added two hits. Camryn Bailey took the loss after striking out six over 7.1 innings.
The Choctaws will face the University of Alabama in Huntsville in an elimination game Friday at 12:30 p.m. at Choccolocco Park.
