Mississippi State’s Yago Horno Mateo Named SEC Freshman of the Week
Mississippi State golfer Yago Horno Mateo has been named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday. The freshman from Sotogrande, Spain, posted a fourth-place finish at the Visit Knoxville Collegiate in his first tournament with the Bulldogs.
Horno Mateo opened with a 3-under 67 and followed with two 2-under 68 rounds, finishing with a 7-under 203 overall. He recorded nine birdies and an eagle over 54 holes, playing consistent golf throughout the event. His debut is the best by a State golfer since Drew Wilson finished tied for third at the 2024 Thomas Sharkey Individual Collegiate.
He is the fifth freshman in program history to earn the SEC Freshman of the Week honor. Past recipients include current Bulldogs Bryson Hughes and Drew Wilson, as well as former players Garrett Endicott and Ford Clegg.
