Coahoma baseball turns to winter conditioning after fall exhibitions
Coahoma Community College baseball is moving into winter conditioning after completing its fall exhibition schedule, with the Tigers emphasizing strength and continued player development ahead of spring competition.
The program brought in 19 new players this fall, and coach Austin Biggs said the group showed growth on the field and in the weight room, as well as greater maturity in responding to adversity. He said the team’s daily work began to show in its performance.
At the plate, Coahoma met its goal of recording quality at-bats 50% of the time, according to the program. The Tigers also stole 20 bases in 23 attempts against outside competition.
Pitchers improved their ability to control the running game, and some added as much as 5 mph to their fastball velocity, the program said. During winter training, the staff plans to build functional strength, maintain hard contact at the plate and sharpen hitters’ adjustments. Pitchers will work on locating multiple pitches for strikes.
Coahoma also plans to focus on stabilizing the middle infield, where five new players competed during the fall. Biggs said he wants players to take responsibility for their development while improving communication and supporting and challenging teammates.
Coahoma Community College is a public, historically Black community college in Clarksdale, Mississippi. Its baseball team competes in NJCAA athletics.
