Jackson, Mississippi — Diego Sarzalejo of the Belhaven men’s soccer team and Alexis Whiting of the Belhaven women’s soccer team have been named C Spire Athletes of the Week, according to the university.
Sarzalejo, a senior defender from Caracas, Venezuela, scored two game-winning goals during the week. One was against Rhodes College — the first time the Blazers had beaten Rhodes in more than a decade — and the other was a bicycle kick that secured a 1-0 victory over Millsaps College.
Whiting, a sophomore forward from Mandeville, Louisiana, came off the bench to score in each of the first three matches of the season. She is tied for fourth in the conference with three goals this season.
Belhaven’s men’s team will face Covenant in a rematch of the 2024 CCS Championship on Saturday. The women’s team will host Pensacola State on Thursday after starting conference play with a 3-0 record.
