Scores from last Night: Petal edges Brandon; Wesson stays perfect; OLA wins 3A title
Petal found the fourth quarter’s only points to edge Brandon 35–34, Wesson handed Amite County its first loss with a 9–0 shutout, and Our Lady Academy turned a split opening pair of sets into a Class 3A volleyball championship. Those results lead this selection of completed Mississippi varsity games from Friday, October 16.
Petal finishes one point ahead of Brandon
Petal’s seven-point fourth quarter made the difference in a 35–34 home victory over Brandon. The Panthers scored in every quarter, while Brandon did not score in the fourth. MaxPreps lists Petal at 7–1 after the game and Brandon at 5–2.

Wesson and Lake Cormorant keep perfect records
Wesson’s defense supplied the defining result in a meeting of unbeaten teams. The Cobras shut out visiting Amite County 9–0 to finish the night 8–0, while the Trojans took their first defeat and moved to 6–1. The final delivered a clear answer to one of the central questions in our Friday Games To Watch preview.
Lake Cormorant also stayed unbeaten, winning 14–9 at Center Hill. All of the visitors’ scoring came before halftime; their lead survived a scoreless second half on offense and a six-point fourth quarter from the Mustangs. Lake Cormorant is 7–0 after the win, with Center Hill at 5–2.
A high-scoring Coast finish and a close Oxford road win
D’Iberville protected its unbeaten record in a very different kind of game, beating St. Martin 55–50. The Warriors finished the night 8–0 despite allowing 50 points; St. Martin’s postgame record was 6–2.
Oxford won a close road game, 27–24 at Germantown. The Chargers’ postgame record stands at 6–1, while the Mavericks are 4–3. The result adds a road conference victory to the Chargers’ season.
Girls volleyball: Our Lady Academy takes the Class 3A final
Our Lady Academy beat Kossuth 3–1 in the Class 3A state final, winning the sets 25–21, 20–25, 25–18 and 25–8. After Kossuth drew level in the second, the Crescents won the final two sets and held the Aggies to eight points in the fourth. MaxPreps lists Our Lady Academy at 31–10 after the match and Kossuth at 30–5.
The state-final setting was a neutral court at A.E. Wood Coliseum, as documented in Alcorn Sports’ Friday outlook. The match listing’s home-and-away labels therefore should not be read as a home-court advantage for Kossuth.
Corinth shuts out Tishomingo County; DeSoto Central and MRA win
Corinth produced a 55–0 home victory over Tishomingo County, ending the night 5–2 while the Braves fell to 4–3. DeSoto Central beat Horn Lake 39–21 and moved to 6–1; Horn Lake remained winless at 0–7.
Madison-Ridgeland Academy held off Jackson Academy 28–24. The Patriots’ postgame record is 6–2, and the Raiders are 7–2.
