Games To Watch: Defending champions face comeback challengers; Tupelo hosts Hernando

Sumrall and Ocean Springs are one victory from repeating as state volleyball champions, but both face challengers who just proved a two-set deficit need not end a season. New Hope meets Sumrall for the Class 5A title at 4 p.m. CDT Thursday, October 15, before Lewisburg faces Ocean Springs in the Class 7A final at 6 p.m. Both matches are at Mississippi Christian University’s A.E. Wood Coliseum.

Class 5A: Sumrall’s title defense meets New Hope’s comeback

Sumrall has won eight straight matches on its current MaxPreps schedule, which lists the Bobcats at 32–6. After sweeping Northeast Jones and Purvis in the first two playoff rounds, Sumrall won at Vancleave in four sets Monday. The Bobcats took the first two sets 25–14 and 25–15, dropped the third, then closed the match 25–15.

New Hope’s semifinal left much less room for error. Caledonia won the first two sets 25–22 and 25–13, but the Trojans answered with 25–20 and 25–22 victories before taking the fifth 16–14. Thursday gives New Hope the chance to stop the reigning 5A champion, while Sumrall can finish a second consecutive title run. Our full Sumrall–New Hope preview takes a closer look at the matchup.

Class 7A: Recent champions meet again

Ocean Springs and Lewisburg bring championship history into the evening final. Ocean Springs won the 2025 crown; Lewisburg won the 2024 championship against the Greyhounds after losing the first two sets. The matchup puts the last two 7A champions across the net from each other again.

Lewisburg had to repeat that comeback pattern Monday at Germantown. After falling behind 24–26 and 15–25, the Patriots took the next three sets 25–19, 26–24 and 15–7. Ocean Springs also needed a deciding set against Brandon, winning it 15–7 to complete a 3–2 semifinal victory. Current MaxPreps match pages list Lewisburg at 34–8 and Ocean Springs at 32–8.

Each 7A finalist has already had to finish a deciding set to keep its championship opportunity alive. Our Monday playoff roundup follows Lewisburg’s comeback and the other state-final qualifiers.

Football: District starts meet Thursday tests

Hernando brings three straight wins into a road test against unbeaten Tupelo at 7 p.m. CDT. The Tigers enter 5–1, the Golden Wave 7–0, and both are 1–0 in Region 1-7A. Hernando can build on its winning run; Tupelo has another chance to protect a perfect record. Revisit Tupelo’s latest victory in our October 9 football roundup.

Caledonia visits Pontotoc at 7 p.m. CDT in another matchup of teams that opened district play with a win. Both are 1–0 in Region 1-5A, with Pontotoc 5–1 overall and Caledonia 3–3. The Cavaliers come off a 27–8 victory over Columbus on October 9; Thursday offers a chance to follow it with another region win.

Lumberton’s trip to Resurrection Catholic at 7 p.m. CDT carries a similar district opportunity despite the teams’ losing overall records. The Panthers are 2–4 overall and 1–0 in Region 8-1A after beating Richton 40–20 on October 8. The Eagles are 2–4–1 overall but 2–0 in district play, putting unbeaten region starts on both sides of the matchup.

New Hope’s season record and winning streak are withheld because its current schedule contains two Caledonia win entries for the same date. Those totals require clarification; the semifinal result itself is supported by the match box score.
