Games To Watch: Central challenges Kossuth’s streak; Corinth pursues district momentum

Alcorn Central gets a third chance to stop Kossuth, with a semifinal berth now attached to the county volleyball rivalry. The Aggies bring a 20-match winning streak into Thursday’s quarterfinal, while Corinth heads to North Pontotoc trying to build on its unbeaten start in district football. Those matchups anchor Mississippi’s Games To Watch for October 8, 2026.

Central’s playoff reset meets Kossuth’s streak

Kossuth hosts Alcorn Central on Thursday in the Class 3A quarterfinal. The Aggies enter 28–4, while the Lady Bears are 12–19. Kossuth swept both September meetings and finished its district slate unbeaten, but Central has swept its first two playoff opponents to earn another opportunity. The winner moves into the semifinals.

The contrast gives this rematch its pull: Kossuth’s sustained dominance meets a Central team whose postseason has begun with consecutive sweeps. Alcorn Sports MS’s county preview details the third meeting, and our latest statewide playoff recap follows Kossuth’s advance against Nettleton.

Tippah’s home tests and a road rematch

Ripley hosts New Albany at 6 p.m. CDT in the Class 4A playoffs. The Lady Tigers enter 17–15 with four consecutive wins; New Albany is 30–9. An August sweep by the Bulldogs gives Ripley a clear measure of the challenge. This time the Lady Tigers have home court and a place in the next round to play for.

Walnut’s 30–4 season and 11-match winning streak face their next test when Myrtle visits at 6 p.m. CDT in the Class 2A playoffs. The Hawks enter 22–7, giving the Wildcats a winning opponent as they try to extend both their streak and their postseason. Walnut’s latest victory is covered in our statewide recap linked above.

Pine Grove has the road assignment, visiting Ingomar at 6 p.m. CDT in Class 1A. The Panthers are 23–11 and the Falcons 23–7. Ingomar swept their August meeting, so Pine Grove also has a familiar result to overturn. Tippah Sports’s Thursday preview brings together the county’s playoff rematches and Walnut’s streak.

Hernando takes its survival act to Lewisburg

Hernando visits Lewisburg at 6 p.m. CDT in the Class 7A playoffs, with the Tigers entering 24–13 and the Patriots 32–8. Hernando’s route here was far from comfortable: after losing a two-set lead at Oxford, the Tigers won the deciding set 15–9. That escape keeps their season alive for a trip to a Lewisburg team with the stronger entering record. The Patriots advanced with a sweep of visiting Starkville, as DeSoto County News reports.

Corinth protects its district start; Falkner seeks a road win

Corinth’s 7 p.m. CDT visit to North Pontotoc is a conference game with the teams starting from different positions. The Warriors are 3–2 overall and 1–0 in district play; the Vikings are 2–4 and 0–1. Corinth has an opportunity to preserve its unbeaten district start, while North Pontotoc seeks its first district win.

Falkner visits Riverside in Avon at 7 p.m. CDT for a nonconference game. The Eagles enter 2–3 and have won both home games while dropping all three road games. Riverside is 0–6. For Falkner, the immediate test is carrying a winning performance away from home; for the Bulldogs, it is finding their first victory.
