Games To Watch: Walnut and Kossuth defend streaks; Ripley, Lake Cormorant host playoff tests

Walnut and Kossuth bring long winning runs into another night of elimination volleyball, while Ripley and Lake Cormorant face a different test: making home court count against opponents with better overall records. Those four matchups lead this selection of Mississippi high-school varsity games to watch Tuesday, October 6, 2026. Kossuth starts at 5:30 p.m.; Walnut, Ripley and Lake Cormorant follow at 6 p.m. All times are Central.

Walnut puts its run against East Webster

Walnut hosts East Webster in the Class 2A playoffs with a 29-4 record and ten straight victories. Saturday’s 3-0 win over Leland kept that run intact and gave the Wildcats a straight-set opening to the postseason. East Webster arrives 13-18-1, including a 6-2 district mark. The difference in overall records is substantial, but Walnut still has to turn its season-long consistency into another playoff win.

The Wildcats finished district play 8-0 and have gone 12-1 at home. Their reported season totals identify several reasons to watch beyond the record: Molly-Kate Rolison leads the listed attack with 375 kills and also has 308 digs, while Vivian Brown has 660 assists and 65 aces. Those numbers describe Walnut’s reported work entering the matchup; they are not statistics from tonight’s match.

Ripley gets another home playoff test

Ripley’s 6 p.m. meeting with Itawamba Agricultural pairs the 16-15 Tigers with the 14-8 Indians in Class 4A. Ripley advanced by beating North Pontotoc 3-1 on October 3, a result covered in our first-round recap. That win extended the Tigers’ streak to three matches and kept their postseason alive.

Ripley’s overall record does not tell the whole story of its route here. The Tigers finished first in Class 4A Region 3 with a 7-0 district record, and their home mark is 8-4. Itawamba Agricultural went 6-2 in district play and enters with a 4-4 road record. The matchup puts Ripley’s unbeaten district campaign alongside an opponent that has lost fewer matches overall.

Kossuth tries to extend its streak

Kossuth opens the featured evening slate against visiting Nettleton at 5:30 p.m. in Class 3A. The Aggies are 27-4 and have won 19 consecutive matches, according to Alcorn County Sports’ playoff preview. Nettleton is 12-16. The immediate question is whether the Tigers can interrupt a run that has carried Kossuth into another postseason home date.

The district records offer another useful comparison: Kossuth went 8-0, while Nettleton finished 6-2. At home, the Aggies have been 14-2; Nettleton’s road record is 4-7. Those are entering records rather than a prediction, but they show the task facing the visitors. A strong district campaign has brought Nettleton this far, and tonight asks it to win on a court where few opponents have succeeded.

Lake Cormorant welcomes Ridgeland

Lake Cormorant hosts Ridgeland at 6 p.m. in the Class 6A playoffs. The Gators enter 16-20, while the Titans are 14-11. Lake Cormorant’s district record, however, is 7-3, compared with Ridgeland’s 6-3. The home team also has a winning record on its own court at 7-6, giving this matchup a different shape from a glance at the overall standings.

Lake Cormorant’s reported leaders give the match several individual threads to follow. Laylie Moore has 288 kills, Kayla Gonzalez has 534 assists and Micayiah Thompson has 490 digs. Kinsley Stevens leads the team’s listed ace totals with 79. Those season figures identify the players behind much of the Gators’ recorded production as they try to turn a home playoff opportunity into another round.
