Games to Watch: Unbeaten East Union hosts New Site in Monday volleyball playoff
East Union’s unbeaten volleyball season faces its next playoff test Monday evening, when New Site visits Blue Springs. The Urchins bring a 34-0 record into the Class 2A matchup; the Royals arrive at 17-6. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m. Central on October 5.
Elsewhere, DeSoto Christian Academy, listed on MaxPreps under its former name of Desoto County Academy, travels across the Tennessee line to face Rossville Christian Academy at 5 p.m., while Pillow Academy visits Simpson Academy in Mendenhall at 6:30. Those matches offer different measures of progress: a road test against a winning opponent for Desoto, and an opportunity for Pillow to find its first reported victory.
New Site at East Union: a playoff test in Blue Springs
The records make East Union the obvious team to watch, but New Site brings momentum of its own. The Royals have won four straight, most recently sweeping Charleston. That victory was decisive in every set: 25-12, 25-6 and 25-8. Monday asks whether that form can carry over against an opponent that has yet to lose.
East Union also advanced with a sweep, beating Kemper County, as covered in our previous-round roundup. With both teams coming off straight-set wins, this meeting puts their recent success on the same court. The immediate stake is continued progress in the MHSAA Class 2A postseason. The current matchup listing places New Site on the road and East Union at home.
East Union has established individual production behind that record. Ann Fleming LeFlore has 531 kills in the team’s posted statistics, while Reagan Johnson has 512 digs. They provide two players to follow as New Site tries to interrupt the Urchins’ run, with LeFlore contributing in attack and Johnson helping keep rallies alive.
DeSoto Christian Academy at Rossville Christian: an interstate road test
Rossville enters with a posted 19-13 overall record and has gone 8-3 at home. Its district record is 4-2, although Monday’s match is listed as non-district. For the visiting Ambassadors, the challenge is to produce a result against a team with a winning record both overall and on its own floor.
Rossville’s latest listed result is a 3-0 win over Millington Central, following a four-set loss to West Memphis Christian. Desoto’s posted record is 0-2, so it should be read as the available reported record rather than a complete account of its season. Its most recent reported result was a three-set loss to Jackson Academy.
Pillow Academy at Simpson Academy: a chance to change course
Pillow brings a posted 0-12 record to Mendenhall, while Simpson is 1-11. The non-district match gives both programs a chance to improve those records. For Pillow, a win would put the Mustangs in the victory column of their posted record; for Simpson, it would add to a season in which wins have also been scarce.
Both teams enter after straight-set defeats. Pillow lost to Madison-Ridgeland Academy on October 3, and Simpson fell to Hartfield Academy on October 1. Monday gives each a new opponent and a direct opportunity to respond. The varsity match is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Central.
