Southern Miss women’s soccer opens season with 4-0 win over Alabama State

Montgomery, Ala. — Southern Miss opened its 2026 women’s soccer season with a 4-0 win over Alabama State on Thursday night at the ASU Soccer Complex. The Golden Eagles dominated the match, outshooting the Hornets 16-7 and keeping a clean sheet in Owens’s first game as head coach, according to the team.

Ava Bynes scored twice early in the match, opening the scoring in the third minute and adding her second goal in the 59th minute. Shaelynn Quick contributed a goal at 31 minutes, assisted by Leslie Rodriguez, and Ameera Edwards scored in the first half. Bynes finished with two goals on two shots, while Quick scored once with three shot attempts.

Southern Miss controlled possession throughout the game, registering five corner kicks to Alabama State’s none. Logan McGruder started in goal for the first half, making two saves, and Jenni Dähne played the second half, earning her first shutout of the season. Alabama State managed only two shots on goal in the game.

The Golden Eagles will continue their non-conference schedule Sunday at McNeese State in Lake Charles, Louisiana, before opening Sun Belt Conference play Sept. 18 against James Madison at home, according to team sources.
