Southern Miss Football Continues Preseason Practice Under Hot Conditions

The University of Southern Mississippi football team practiced Wednesday morning at the Joe P. Park Practice Facility under hot, sunny conditions. The team, in full pads, worked for nearly two hours, focusing on live scrimmage drills. During these periods, the Golden Eagles’ defense made several notable stops, according to team reports.

With no returning starters on defense this fall, the coaching staff has been busy rebuilding the roster. The team has added 74 newcomers, including transfers and recruits, in an effort to strengthen the squad for the 2026 season. Even after spring practices introduced new players, the team continued to add talent during the offseason.

Defensive coordinator Joe Bolden praised three recent additions to the linebacker room. He traveled to Kansas and Utah to secure Tyler Lassiter from Hutchinson Community College, Wesley Edison from Coffeyville Community College, and Marrio Williams Jr. from Snow College in Utah. Bolden called all three players “phenomenal human beings” and praised their contributions during camp.

Southern Miss is scheduled to face Alcorn State in the season opener on Saturday, Sept. 5, at 4 p.m. in Hattiesburg. The team will take Thursday off before returning to practice Friday, leading up to the first official scrimmage of the preseason.
