The University of Southern Mississippi football team held its second day of fall practice Wednesday morning at the Joe P. Park Practice Facility in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. The Golden Eagles practiced in helmets and shorts under sunny, hot conditions as they prepare for the 2026 season opener against Alcorn State on Sept. 5 at The Rock.
Southern Miss defensive coordinator Joe Bolden, in his first season in the role, spoke with the media after practice. He praised his unit’s efforts during the offseason and the early days of fall camp.
“Our guys had a really good summer going into fall camp, and I am excited about this group,” Bolden said. “I have a willing group and guys that are ready to work. They care a lot, and that is something that can’t be taken lightly, which is a blessing.”
Bolden emphasized his role and that of the coaching staff as teachers aiming to maximize player success. He highlighted returning linebacker Mathis Haygood, a redshirt junior from Fayetteville, Georgia, as a leader in the making. “Mathis has been a pleasant surprise,” Bolden said. “He has grown up significantly and taken on that leadership role, which is very important to him.”
