Ole Miss Football Prepares for Season Opener Against Louisville

OXFORD, Miss. — Ole Miss football is shifting into game-week mode as the Rebels prepare for their season opener against Louisville on Sept. 6 in Nashville, according to head coach Pete Golding. Golding spoke with the media Monday after the team’s second fall scrimmage, highlighting the team’s progress and focus on finalizing the roster.

Golding said the team is excited to begin preparing for an opponent after wrapping up fall camp. “It feels awesome. … And today’s the first day of class and getting our guys ready for that routine, but it’s nice to dive into where, all right, here’s an opponent,” he said. The team aims to balance game plan development with continued competition this week, Golding added, emphasizing the importance of consistency.

He noted the team has shown flashes of winning football but needs to improve across all three phases. “The ups and downs right now, really in all three phases, is really what we’re focusing on this week,” Golding said. He stressed avoiding penalties and mistakes that can extend drives or stop momentum, saying many games are lost through self-inflicted errors.

Golding praised the progress of freshmen Landon Barnes, Jayden Curtis, and Carmelow Reed, noting they have become more comfortable within the system. “Those three guys will be ready sooner than later,” he said. Golding also highlighted Curtis’ upside and continued flashes from Barnes during fall camp.

The coach also discussed the importance of versatility in the secondary, particularly moving players around to improve communication and understanding. He pointed to Edwin Joseph’s contributions at both safety and cornerback, calling him “really, really impressive.”

Ole Miss fans are encouraged to stay connected through the team’s official newsletter, The Sip, for updates and content throughout the season.
