Northwest Mississippi softball splits doubleheader against Copiah-Lincoln
Senatobia, Miss. — The Northwest Mississippi Community College softball team split a doubleheader against Copiah-Lincoln Community College on Saturday. The Rangers fell 16-2 in the first game but narrowly lost 4-2 in the second, earning the fifth seed in the Region 23 tournament, according to school officials.
In the opener, Co-Lin took an early 2-0 lead with a run in the first inning and a solo home run in the second. Meredith Dearman started for Northwest but struggled, giving up multiple runs. The Wolves added six more runs in the fourth inning, including a second home run from Abby Burnette, and ultimately won by the run rule.
Northwest responded in the second game, taking an early lead on a sacrifice fly by Carleigh Calarco in the bottom of the first. Co-Lin answered with a home run in the third, but the Rangers tied the game in the bottom of the inning after Ava Claire Rhoden scored on a wild pitch. The Wolves regained the lead in the fourth with an RBI single, then extended it with an RBI double in the seventh to seal the victory. Despite opportunities in the fifth and seventh innings, Northwest was unable to rally.
The Rangers will conclude their season with a road game against No. 5 Pearl River on Saturday. Game times are scheduled for noon and 2 p.m., with streaming available at nwccrangers.com. The Region 23 tournament begins Saturday in Wesson, featuring Northwest, Co-Lin, LSU-Eunice, and the winner of a play-in game between Hinds and Southwest Mississippi.
