Nasim Cairo transfers to Southern Miss for final college season

HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Nasim Cairo, a redshirt senior defensive lineman, has transferred to Southern Miss for his final college football season, aiming to boost his development and play at the Football Bowl Subdivision level.

Cairo, who previously played three seasons at Southeast Missouri State University, suffered a torn ankle ligament during his senior year, which required surgery and extensive rehab. Despite setbacks, he remained committed to competing at a higher level, according to his statements.

The 6-foot-2, 272-pound Illinois native expressed confidence in his decision to transfer, citing his desire to challenge himself and the influence of former coach Jerone Steckel, who recruited him to Southern Miss. Steckel, now the Golden Eagles’ defensive line coach, had coached Cairo as a freshman, and they maintained contact over the years.

First-year head coach Blake Anderson and the Southern Miss staff impressed Cairo with their culture and standards. Cairo said he appreciates the team’s depth on the defensive line and is competing for a starting role. Defensive coordinator Joe Bolden praised Cairo’s energy and explosiveness, calling him a valuable addition to the squad.

Cairo is also on track to graduate in December with a degree in liberal studies and a minor in anthropology. He said he and his teammates are motivated to prove their hard work and offseason training are paying off this fall, emphasizing their focus on making a statement on the field.
