MUW Women’s Soccer Loses Season Opener to Huntingdon
The Mississippi University for Women women’s soccer team suffered a 5-0 defeat to Huntingdon College in their season opener Saturday at the Roger Short Soccer Complex in Columbus, Mississippi. The Owls are now 0-1-0, while the Hawks moved to 1-1-0.
MUW stayed within striking distance after the first half, trailing 2-0. However, Huntingdon scored three unanswered goals in the second half. The match was interrupted by a one-hour lightning delay in the 58th minute. Once play resumed, the teams played into the 71st minute before darkness forced the game to be called, according to the school.
Goalkeeper Layla Escobedo, filling in after regular starter Cam Lopez was unavailable, made six saves in her collegiate debut. Reagan Shinn led MUW with three shot attempts, including both shots on goal in the first half. Seniors Abby Warchus and Emma Hall each attempted one shot.
The teams will rematch Sunday at 2 p.m. in Montgomery, Alabama, to conclude their home-and-home series.
