Mississippi State opens season with record offensive performance, eyes improvement

STARKVILLE — Mississippi State kicked off its football season with a dominant 62-13 victory over ULM at Davis Wade Stadium Saturday, setting a school record with 762 yards of total offense, according to the team.

Quarterback Kamario Taylor led the way, passing for 354 yards and four touchdowns while rushing for 59 yards and another score. Four Bulldogs each rushed for at least 50 yards, and four receivers caught touchdown passes. The Bulldogs’ defense allowed only one touchdown, recorded a couple of sacks, and had six tackles for loss, fans said, echoing the traditional cowbell clangs.

Despite the overwhelming win, head coach Jeff Lebby noted there was room for improvement. “There was a lot of good, but plenty to clean up,” he said postgame, emphasizing that the team’s focus remains on continued progress rather than celebration.

Lebby’s comments reflected a sense of expectation rather than hope. He believes his team has the talent and drive to improve. Taylor, a Mississippi native, shared that he was not fully satisfied with his performance, citing missed throws and better decision-making as areas to improve. “I missed some plays I want back,” Taylor said. “I’m trying to learn from it and stay consistent.”

Linebacker Jalen Smith echoed this mindset, stating that the team recognizes the need for corrections after the first game. Lebby said the team will begin immediate work on these adjustments, with the next challenge a tough road game at Minnesota. Despite the win, the coach made it clear that the Bulldogs are not satisfied and will work tirelessly to get better.

“We have a ton to clean up,” Lebby said. “That starts immediately.” The team’s focus now shifts to preparing for the Minnesota game, with Lebby stressing the importance of every minute of practice going forward. The Bulldogs aim to build on their record-breaking start with continued improvement, he added.
