Sacramento State Dominates Mississippi Valley State 52-0

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Mississippi Valley State was shut out in a 52-0 loss to Sacramento State at Hornet Stadium Saturday night. The Delta Devils (0-2) managed 104 rushing yards and forced two Hornets turnovers but could not mount a sustained offense.

Sacramento State opened the scoring after blocking a punt that set up the Hornets at the MVSU 9-yard line. Jackson Sharman threw a five-yard touchdown pass to Matthew Coleman on the next play. The Delta Devils responded with a turnover when Jamari Stokes intercepted Sharman at the Hornets’ 27-yard line, but MVSU missed a 41-yard field goal attempt on the ensuing drive.

Stokes finished with an interception and six tackles. Malek Jackson led the defense with eight tackles, and Will Hawkins added six. Derrick Taylor recovered a fumble in the third quarter, helping the defense even the turnover margin. The secondary recorded five pass breakups, with Kamsi Arinze and Mahkeil Shuler each contributing two.

On offense, Dezmond Ray led MVSU with 36 rushing yards on three carries, including a 30-yard run. Norman Taylor added 25 yards on five carries, and Carter James gained 23 yards on 10 attempts. Quarterback Josh Brown threw for 24 yards and rushed for 17, completing 6 of 13 passes. Jackson Hampton’s 18-yard reception was the longest of the night for the Delta Devils.

Punter Nicholas Stephens placed two punts inside the 20 and had a long of 54 yards. Sacramento State built a 14-0 lead after the first quarter and extended it to 31-0 by halftime. The Hornets added 21 points in the second half to seal the victory. Sacramento State will host UC Davis next weekend.

Mississippi Valley State will prepare for the 2026 Chicago Football Classic, where it will face Lincoln University (Pa.) on Sept. 12 at Soldier Field in Chicago, according to team officials.
