Jackson State routs Edward Waters 66-14 with career-best performance from Jared Lockhart
Jackson, Miss. — Jared Lockhart set a career high with 388 passing yards and four touchdowns as Jackson State defeated Edward Waters 66-14 on Saturday night at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium.
The sophomore quarterback was named offensive MVP for Jackson State (2-0), while defensive back Swipe Marshall earned defensive MVP honors. The Tigers scored 38 unanswered points in the first half and finished with 704 total yards of offense.
Jackson State’s offense was well-balanced, accumulating 388 passing yards and 316 rushing yards. Lockhart completed 17 of 25 passes without an interception, averaging more than 22 yards per completion. His four touchdown passes went to four different receivers, helping the Tigers build a commanding 38-0 halftime lead.
The Tigers’ first drive was highlighted by Lockhart’s 97-yard touchdown march after the defense forced a turnover at the three-yard line. Lockhart connected with Nate Rembert for 53 yards and Nate Blount IV for 18 yards before finding Jency Riley Jr. for a 12-yard score. Jackson State extended its lead with a 69-yard drive culminating in a four-yard touchdown pass to Joanes Fortilien.
In the second quarter, Nate Blount scored on an eight-yard run, and Kobe Paul caught an 18-yard touchdown pass from Lockhart. The Tigers went into halftime leading 38-0. They continued to dominate in the second half, stretching the lead to 52-0 after touchdown runs by CJ Tolbert III and Blount.
Edward Waters finally got on the board late in the third quarter with a 52-yard interception return for a touchdown by Dylan McCarthy. The Tigers responded with two more rushing touchdowns in the fourth quarter, from Li’Darious Pryor and Jartavious Smart, pushing the score to 66-7. The Wildcats added a late touchdown on Torey Morrison’s 29-yard run.
Defensively, Jackson State limited Edward Waters to 231 yards of total offense and just 48 rushing yards on 30 attempts. The Tigers recorded four sacks and 10 tackles for loss. Swipe Marshall finished with five tackles, half a tackle for loss, a pass breakup and a quarterback hurry.
Jackson State is scheduled to return to action on Sept. 19 after a bye week, facing Tuskegee in the W.C. Gorden Classic.
