GLASGOW, Scotland — Two former Mississippi State University athletes brought home medals from the Commonwealth Games held over the weekend. Navasky Anderson won gold in the men’s 800 meters, while Nicholas Fakorede earned a bronze medal as part of Nigeria’s 4×100 meter relay team, according to reports.
Anderson, a former Bulldog, narrowly qualified for the final after a dramatic semifinal face-first dive that secured his spot as a top-two time qualifier. In the final, he posted the fastest first and last 100 meters, winning in 1:45.33 and becoming the first Jamaican man to win Commonwealth gold in the event. His victory moved him to No. 11 in the world rankings for the men’s 800 meters, sources said.
Fakorede, a rising junior, ran the third leg of Nigeria’s relay team, which finished with a bronze medal after a series of appeals. The team initially placed third on the track behind Australia and Canada. Canada was disqualified for a lane infringement but was later reinstated, and Nigeria received the bronze. Fakorede also competed individually in the 100 meters, running a semifinal time of 10.06 seconds, just one hundredth of a second shy of qualifying for the final, according to officials.
Other athletes with ties to Mississippi State also competed at the event. Lee Eppie finished fourth in the 400 meters with a time of 45.31 seconds, and Anderson Peters placed fourth in the men’s javelin with a throw of 83.88 meters on his last attempt. Peters’ performance was also highlighted, with reports noting his near-miss for a medal.
