Mississippi College Baseball Splits Series with West Florida
CLINTON, Miss. — Mississippi College baseball split a Gulf South Conference doubleheader Saturday at Frierson Field. The Choctaws (26-20, 19-11 GSC) won the first game 10-7, then fell 13-6 in the second. The series victory marked MC’s first over West Florida (32-13, 18-12 GSC).
In the opener, MC broke a tight game open in the fourth inning with a seven-run rally. The inning featured six hits and 11 batters sent to the plate. Tyrus Williams sparked the rally with a leadoff walk and scored on Jake LaRocca’s single. Tyler Sanderson and Creek Robertson added RBI singles, and Robertson capped the inning with a two-run double. JT Thigpen contributed an RBI double down the left field line.
Williams led the offense with two hits, two RBIs, and two runs scored. Robertson drove in two runs, and LaRocca had two hits and scored twice. The team totaled 12 hits, including four doubles and a home run. Blake Gollott earned the win in relief, facing just one batter. Dylan Cope closed the game with four innings, allowing one run on five hits for the save.
Mississippi College scored first with a solo home run from Williams in the second. UWF responded with four runs in the fifth inning, but the Choctaws answered back throughout the game. An insurance RBI single from Johnson in the eighth helped seal the victory, despite late threats from the Argos.
The second game saw UWF take control with a five-run sixth inning, turning a 5-3 lead into a 10-3 advantage. The Argonauts capitalized on errors, walks, and clutch hits to extend the lead. The Choctaws out-hit UWF 12-9 but couldn’t overcome the deficit. Kelby Jordan, Williams, and Ty Murphy contributed with hits, and LaRocca added a two-run single in the seventh.
Williams finished with two hits and an RBI; Gadman added two hits, including a double, and a stolen base. UWF benefited from free passes and defensive miscues. Cooper Cooksey took the loss, allowing four earned runs over two innings. Connor Pittman and Kamryn Carlisle pitched in relief.
Mississippi College returns to action Tuesday with a 5 p.m. road game at Arkansas-Monticello.
