Jackson State wins series with 14-1 victory over Alcorn State
Jackson, Miss. — Jackson State’s Jayden Lopez threw his second consecutive complete game, leading the Tigers to a 14-1 win over Alcorn State in Southwestern Athletic Conference action Sunday at Braddy Field.
Lopez (5-3) allowed just one unearned run on five hits over seven innings, striking out 15 batters. The senior has recorded 29 strikeouts in his last three outings spanning 19.1 innings, according to team sources.
The Tigers jumped ahead early, scoring six runs in the first inning on four hits, including a two-run home run by Shemar Harris — his first career homer — to left field. Jackson State added four more runs in the second inning, highlighted by RBI doubles from Hederick Torres and Diego Melendez, and extended their lead to 14-0 after three innings.
Jackson State finished with 13 hits, with nine of the 10 batters reaching base. Melendez went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and three runs scored, while Torres also went 3-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored. The Tigers secured the series win with their dominant performance.
The teams are scheduled to play the final game of the series Monday at 3 p.m., according to team officials. Jackson State improved to 20-23 overall and 11-12 in SWAC play, while Alcorn State’s record was not specified.
