Delta State beats No. 1 West Alabama to advance in GSC tournament

OXFORD, Ala. — Delta State University’s baseball team secured a 7-1 victory over top-ranked West Alabama on Sunday at Choccolocco Park, advancing to the next round of the Gulf South Conference tournament.

The Statesmen (29-20) took control early, scoring two runs in the second inning after a West Alabama error and a groundout by Bo Rock. They expanded the lead in the fifth, plating four runs on four hits, including a two-RBI double from Tucker Jones and RBI singles from Levi Lang and Cade Greer.

Bo Rock added a solo home run in the sixth inning, pushing Delta State’s lead to 7-0. On the mound, Mason Shropshire pitched 7.2 innings, allowing one hit and one run while striking out eight. He carried a no-hit bid into the eighth before departing. Eli Akins finished the game, pitching the final 1.1 innings to secure the win.

At the plate, Tucker Jones led with two hits and two RBIs. Greer added two hits and an RBI, while Lang and Rock each drove in two runs. West Alabama was limited to three hits, with its only run scored in the eighth inning.

With the win, Delta State advances in the tournament and will face an opponent to be determined Monday at Choccolocco Park at 11 a.m. Central Time.
