Jackson State Beats Alcorn State as Hawk Homers Again
Jackson, Mississippi — Keatan Hawk homered for the third straight game Monday afternoon, but Alcorn State fell to Jackson State 6-2 in the series finale at Braddy Field. The Southwestern Athletic Conference game saw the Braves drop to 9-38 overall and 3-21 in conference play.
Hawk’s two-run homer in the seventh pulled Alcorn within one run at 3-2, scoring Kanious Davis. Jackson State responded immediately with three runs in the bottom of the inning to seal the victory. The rally started when Tyree Reed reached on a bunt single and later scored on a passed ball. With two outs, Shemar Harris singled, and a throwing error by Alcorn third baseman Jamir Hollway allowed two more runs to score, extending the Tigers’ lead to four.
Alcorn starter Kanious Davis took the loss, falling to 3-4. He pitched six strong innings, allowing three runs (two earned) and striking out seven. Reliever Yoni Castro struggled in the seventh, allowing three runs before Jacob Wingard finished the game for the Braves.
Derek Arrocha earned the win for Jackson State, improving to 4-4. He was dominant through six innings, scattering four hits and striking out six batters. Jaedeyn Edwards closed out the game with two scoreless innings for his third save of the season.
Reed contributed offensively for the Tigers, reaching base four times, scoring twice, and driving in a run. Hederick Torres added an RBI double in the second inning. Alcorn’s Chance Jackson went 3-for-4 and nearly hit his first home run of the season but was called out on a controversial call at first base. The Braves left 11 runners on base and struggled with runners in scoring position. A late attempt to steal home was thwarted when Jackson was thrown out at the plate.
Alcorn State will host Prairie View A&M in a league series starting Friday, May 8, at 6 p.m. inside Willie E. “Rat” McGowan Stadium in Lorman, Mississippi. Follow Alcorn State Sports on Twitter for updates.
