Alcorn Softball’s Acevedo Named All-SWAC Second Team
Gulfport, Miss. — Yahnya Acevedo of Alcorn State has been named to the All-Southwestern Athletic Conference second team, the league announced Monday ahead of the SWAC Tournament.
The graduating junior from Tatum, Texas, led the Braves in several offensive categories, including a .385 batting average, 55 hits, nine doubles, 27 RBIs, and three home runs—all of which were inside-the-park. She also ranked among the league’s toughest to strike out, with just six strikeouts in 132 at-bats, according to conference officials.
Primarily playing in center and left field, Acevedo stole 21 bases in 23 attempts. Defensively, she recorded 70 putouts and five assists in 77 chances. Her offensive contributions included 19 multi-hit games, eight multi-RBI contests, and a streak of reaching base in 13 consecutive games. She finished the season by reaching safely in her last five appearances.
The SWAC awarded honors to several other players, including Florida A&M’s Amari Brown as Player of the Year and Alabama A&M’s Kali Austerman as Hitter of the Year. Southern University’s Aaliyah Zabala was named Pitcher of the Year, while teammate Laila Clark received Newcomer of the Year and Morgan Smith of Prairie View A&M was named Freshman of the Year. Southern’s Brittney Williams earned Coach of the Year honors.
The SWAC Tournament is scheduled to run in a double-elimination format from May 5 to May 8 at the Gulfport Sportsplex, with a potential championship game on May 9.
