Jackson State Sweeps Series from Alcorn State with 6-2 Victory

Jackson, Miss. — Jackson State took an early lead and maintained it to beat Alcorn State 6-2 on Monday in the final game of their Southwestern Athletic Conference series. The Tigers improved to 22-23 overall and 12-12 in conference play.

Jackson State jumped ahead in the second inning with an RBI double from Hederick Torres. Tyree Reed scored the first run in the first inning on a wild pitch. The Tigers extended their lead to 3-0 after Reed’s RBI single in the fourth inning, which also scored Shemar Harris and unearned runs from Torres.

Alcorn State responded in the seventh inning, cutting the deficit to 3-2 on a two-run homer by Keatan Hawk. Jackson State answered back with three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Reed scored again, and a series of errors and singles allowed the Tigers to push their lead to 6-2.

Derek Arrocha earned the win, allowing four hits and striking out six over six innings. Jaedeyn Edwards pitched the final two innings for his third save of the season, giving up two hits. Jackson State now sits five games ahead of Mississippi Valley State for the eighth seed in the conference tournament and is one game behind Arkansas-Pine Bluff with six games remaining.

The Tigers are scheduled to play non-conference games Tuesday against Southern in Baton Rouge. Jackson State’s next series will be against Arkansas-Pine Bluff to close out the regular season.
