Delta State Lady Statesmen Set to Play Three Games in Five Days

The Delta State University Lady Statesmen women’s basketball team will play three games in five days this week, starting Tuesday evening. The team travels to Jackson, Tennessee, to face the Union Lady Bulldogs at 5:30 p.m., according to the university.

The Lady Statesmen return to Walter Sillers Coliseum Thursday to host Valdosta State at 5:30 p.m. The stretch concludes Saturday at 2 p.m. at home against the University of West Florida. All three games will be broadcast live on the Statesmen Sports Radio Network, with the last two streamed on FloCollege, voice of the Statesmen Michael Gross announced.

Delta State enters the week after a 74-71 victory Saturday at West Alabama. The team sports a 12-9 overall record and is 10-6 in Gulf South Conference play, according to school officials.

Jaryiah Williamson, who averaged 22.5 points in two road games last week, is averaging 11.4 points this season. Dakiya Toney leads the team in rebounds with an average of 6.7 per game. In Saturday’s win, Toney scored 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Madi Kate Vuncannon is among the top shooters in the GSC, making 36% of her three-point attempts and averaging 1.9 per game.

The Union Lady Bulldogs are averaging 86 points per game, with an 18.3-point scoring margin. Last weekend, they won road games against Montevallo (83-60) and AUM (84-66). Olivia Lee leads the team with 16 points per game and over six rebounds. She scored 19 points in the last game, adding six assists and five rebounds.

Valdosta State, which has won three straight games, holds a 12-10 overall record and a 9-7 conference mark. Junior guard Erin Whalen averages 13.5 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 53 steals. In their most recent victory, she scored 14 points with five rebounds. Senior guard Aryana Hicks adds 10.9 points and 5.1 assists per game.

The University of West Florida has lost four of its last five games but snapped that streak with a 64-60 win over Lee. The Argonauts are led by Isabel Grimes, who averages 14.5 points and 66 assists this season. Graduate forward Amelia Bell, averaging 13.3 points and 8.9 rebounds, also plays a key role for the team.

Delta State’s busy week presents an opportunity to improve their standing in the Gulf South Conference as they prepare for the upcoming stretch of the season.
