Belhaven Men’s Tennis Season Ends with Loss to Maryville in CCS Quarterfinals
Murfeesboro, Tenn. — The Belhaven men’s tennis team saw its season end Thursday after a 5-0 loss to Maryville in the quarterfinals of the Collegiate Conference of the South Tournament.
Maryville took the early lead in doubles play, winning at No. 2 and No. 3 to secure the first point. The No. 1 doubles match between Jesus Diaz and Josiah Leggett of Belhaven was left unfinished with the point already decided.
In singles, Maryville extended its advantage with straight-set victories at the top of the lineup. Harshith Anugonda and Jesus Diaz competed at Nos. 1 and 2 but lost both matches. Stephen Spencer at No. 4 and Paul Stager at No. 6 also fell in straight sets, clinching the match for Maryville.
The remaining matches were halted once the Scots secured the necessary five points. Josiah Leggett was in the middle of a competitive match at No. 3, and Briley Oakes had begun his third set at No. 5 before the match was called incomplete.
Maryville’s James Smith defeated Anugonda 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, and Grant Price beat Diaz 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2. Benjamin Schneider won at No. 4 over Spencer, and Steven Fitzsimmons defeated Stager at No. 6. The No. 3 and No. 5 matches were unfinished.
