Alcorn State Soccer Hosts Northwestern State in Home Opener Thursday

Loreman, Miss. — Alcorn State soccer will open its home schedule Thursday when it hosts Northwestern State at Key Park in Vicksburg. The Lady Braves, with a 1-3 record, are aiming for their first non-conference victory after a 2-0 loss to Mississippi State on Sunday in Starkville.

The match is scheduled for 6 p.m. and will be available via live video. Neither team is ranked in the United Soccer Coaches poll. Northwestern State holds a 4-0 series lead dating back to 2005, with this being the first meeting in Vicksburg. The teams last faced off on Aug. 24, 2025, at Alcorn State.

Alcorn features standout players such as Grace Ambrose, who was named SWAC Offensive Player of the Week for Aug. 18-24. Rebecca Kwoba and Bridget Sakyi have each played all 360 minutes this season, logging full matches in all four games. Annick Zouma scored in the last meeting, capitalizing on a turnover to tie the game in the 20th minute before Northwestern State regained the lead before halftime.

In that game, Alcorn created multiple scoring chances, including seven shots by Ambrose. Despite a penalty kick save by Northwestern State goalkeeper Kennedy Rist in the 54th minute, the Lady Braves could not find the back of the net again. The Demons added an insurance goal in the 78th minute to secure the victory.

Northwestern State enters the game with a 0-4 record and has not played at home this season, making this their fifth straight road game. The Devils are led by Lesha Rollins, who has scored one goal, and have seven players starting every game. Head coach Ian Brophy is in his third season with the team.
