Alcorn and North Carolina A&T Clash in Inaugural Celebration Bowl, Set Stage for HBCU Football
The 2015 inaugural Air Force Reserve Celebration Bowl marked a significant milestone for HBCU football, pitting Alcorn State against North Carolina A&T in a game that went beyond the final score.
Alcorn, led by first-year head coach Jay Hopson, entered the game riding a four-game winning streak. It was Hopson’s final game coaching the Braves before he accepted a position at Southern Mississippi. The team featured standout quarterback Lenorris Footman and linebacker Warren Gatewood.
North Carolina A&T, coached by Rod Broadway, was returning to the postseason after a loss to N.C. Central ended an eight-game winning streak. The Aggies boasted star running back Tarik Cohen and the renowned “Blue Death” defense. They entered the game as conference champions and favorites, with Cohen shining early by rushing for two 70-plus yard touchdowns before halftime.
The second half saw a rally from Alcorn, with Footman orchestrating a comeback. With 1:28 remaining, the Braves drove to the Aggies’ nine-yard line but could not score the winning touchdown. North Carolina A&T won 41-34 in a game that set the tone for future matchups and elevated both programs.
The game launched a period of dominance for the Aggies, who went on to win three Celebration Bowls and post a 27-4 MEAC record from 2016 to 2019. Meanwhile, Alcorn reached the SWAC title game three years in a row and won two championships in 2018 and 2019. The rivalry produced memorable moments and helped raise national exposure for both schools.
Reflecting on the 2015 game highlights its significance as a catalyst for the growth of HBCU football programs. It also marked the beginning of careers for key coaches and players, including Cohen and Footman. Despite the outcome, the game symbolized a victory for HBCU athletics in terms of visibility and legacy.
Today, with the transfer portal and coaching changes, such rivalries face challenges in sustaining their prominence. However, the 2015 Celebration Bowl remains a landmark event that inspired future generations and underscored the importance of HBCU football on the national stage.
