Alabama State Tops Mississippi Valley State 7-2 in Series Opener

Montgomery, Ala. — The Mississippi Valley State University baseball team collected more than 10 hits for the second consecutive game but was limited to two runs in a 7-2 loss to Alabama State on Thursday at Wheeler-Watkins Complex.

The Diamond Devils, now 11-28 overall and 7-14 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play, struggled to capitalize on their offensive output. Alabama State improved to 23-19 and 13-8 in conference, extending its winning streak to three games.

Daniel Scott pitched three innings of one-run ball for Mississippi Valley State, striking out one without issuing a walk. Kendall Brookins went 3-for-5 with three singles and scored a run. Jace Jones and Eric Williams each recorded two hits, while Isreal Ramos reached safely twice, driving in the team’s only RBI. Cody Leming also reached twice, with a hit and a hit-by-pitch.

Alabama State took an early lead with a two-run homer from Trey Callaway in the fourth inning. The Hornets added to their lead with unearned runs in the same inning after errors, and extended it further with RBI singles and doubles in later innings. Devin Chandler’s double in the eighth drove in another run to seal the victory.

The series continues Friday at 5 p.m. as Mississippi Valley State hosts Southern University. Fans can follow the team on Twitter and Instagram at @ValleyStateBSB and @ValleyStateAthletics, respectively.
