Alabama A&M downs Jackson State 11-6 in SWAC series
Jackson State fell to Alabama A&M 11-6 in the second game of their Southwestern Athletic Conference series at Bulldog Field on Saturday. The Tigers led early, scoring three runs in the third inning, but Alabama A&M responded with four home runs, including a grand slam, to take control.
Jackson State opened the scoring in the second inning when Diego Melendez scored on an error. The Tigers extended their lead in the third inning with RBI singles from Tyree Reed and Robert Tate Jr., and a two-run double from Edwin Lemus Hudson Jr. However, Alabama A&M erupted offensively in the bottom half of the inning with AJ Anderson hitting a grand slam to put the Bulldogs ahead.
The Bulldogs continued their offensive barrage with home runs from Brycen Hammonds in the fifth, Tervell Johnson in the seventh, and Keondre Fields in the eighth. Alabama A&M’s offensive onslaught helped them pull away from Jackson State, which managed to score three more runs late in the game but couldn’t overcome the deficit.
Jackson State starting pitcher Jayden Lopez took the loss, working 6.1 innings and allowing eight runs on seven hits. Robert Tate Jr. led the Tigers at the plate with two hits and a run scored, while Diego Melendez added two doubles and two runs scored. Reed and Hudson also contributed with two hits each and multiple RBIs.
The series concludes Sunday at 1 p.m., with the teams facing off in the final game of the series.
