Ole Miss Updates on Former Players in Week 2 of NFL Season
Ole Miss announced that 19 alumni participated in Week 2 of the NFL season, with notable contributions from several players. Indianapolis Colts rookie cornerback Kapena Gushiken made a significant impact on Sunday Night Football against the Kansas City Chiefs.
Gushiken played eight defensive snaps, recording two tackles, including one for a loss, and a key pass breakup late in the game. With 3:28 remaining in regulation and the Chiefs facing third and 7, Gushiken broke up a pass from Patrick Mahomes intended for Rashee Rice, forcing a punt and helping send the game into overtime, according to the Colts’ social media.
Other former Rebels saw action across the league. New England Patriots offensive lineman Ben Brown played five snaps on special teams. Indianapolis Colts linebacker Tahj Chambers played 27 snaps on special teams, with one solo tackle. Jaxson Dart, now with the New York Giants, completed 3 of 5 passes for 20 yards before leaving the game with an injury.
Denver Broncos tight end Evan Engram caught one pass for 17 yards in a 20-13 win over the Jaguars. Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Tre Harris set a career-high with a 53-yard reception in a loss to the Raiders, the tenth-longest passing play of the NFL season so far. Atlanta Falcons linebacker Jared Ivey played 24 defensive snaps in a loss to the Carolina Panthers, while Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Cedric Johnson recorded three tackles, two sacks, and two tackles for loss in a win over the Texans.
Other players included Denver’s D.J. Jones, who played 25 snaps and made one tackle, and Buffalo Bills tight end Dawson Knox, who scored a touchdown on two catches in Thursday night’s victory over the Lions. Several players remained inactive or on injured reserve, such as Los Angeles Chargers cornerback Deane Leonard and Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Elijah Moore.
Additional Ole Miss alumni on practice squads and injured reserve include Trey Amos (Washington Commanders), Laremy Tunsil (Washington), and others, according to league reports. The NFL season continues to showcase the talent developed at Ole Miss, with many alumni contributing to their teams’ efforts.
