Mississippi State’s Oboniye, Pitta Conclude Run at ITA All-American Championships

CRA, N.C. — Mississippi State’s Gianna Oboniye and Athina Pitta competed at the ITA All-American Championships, marking their fall season debut.

The Bulldogs’ doubles team, seeded sixth in the prequalifying draw, advanced past Marshall’s Alina Mokrynska and Isabelle Walker in the Round of 16. They then upset No. 45 Olivia Center and Ahmani Guichard of UCLA, winning in a 10-point tiebreaker after dropping the first set 7-5. Their run ended in the following round of qualifying.

Oboniye qualified for her first main draw appearance by defeating Guichard 6-4, 6-3 in the final round of qualifying. She faced No. 11 Jana Hossam of Florida in her opening match and won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4. The victory was one of the highest-ranked singles wins of her career.

Oboniye’s singles journey concluded in the consolation round, where she lost to Virginia’s Vivian Yang 6-2, 7-6(1). The Bulldogs now shift focus to the upcoming fall tournaments.
